Reconnecting with our soul

Our sense of connection to our Divine Source, our greatest asset in life, breaks down as we are conditioned into the social norms of our community. How do we get it back?

Most of us grow up within conditions that sever our connection to our soul or genuine self from the time we are born. Whereas at birth we enter this reality with a sensory body that is wide open, receptive and connected to Source, this connection gets broken as we are conditioned into the social norms of our community. And as we grow we may lose our connection altogether until such a time when our soul is compelled to evolve, and we are ready to devote ourselves to it.

As the world around us continues to change at a more rapid pace than ever before, we too are compelled to change more rapidly. And by change, I mean evolve. We are—each and every one of us—being called to evolve on a soul level. The question is, who will answer that call?

Some humans will and others won't. There's no right or wrong here. There's just the choice that feels most aligned for us and for our soul.

The voice of our soul has a specific tone to it that makes it easy to distinguish from the voice of our conditioned mind. Once we know the differences between the two, we can start nourishing our relationship with (and trust in) the voice of our soul above that of our conditioned mind.

One simple practice to begin cultivating a more intimate relationship with our soul comes from the Sufi tradition. It's a great way to grow a deeper connection with our infinite self, the part of us that never dies. It's also a helpful tool to use in times we feel overwhelmed, vulnerable or fragile.

Sit in a safe, quiet space where you will not be disturbed for a few minutes. Relax your body and close your eyes. Slow, lengthen and deepen your breathing. Connect with the name you give our Creator or one you know that resonates with you such as Yahweh, Allah or God. Gently place your left hand over your heart in the center of your chest and rest your right hand on top of it. Breathing naturally, say this name into the space around you each time you exhale. Continue in this way for as long as you want. When you are ready to rise, gently lower your hands and take one conscious breath before moving out of the space.
